Physical Science

Text:  Apologia Exploring Creation With Physical Science, 2nd Edition

Class meets:  Mondays, 9:00 am – 11:00 am

This course is an introductory high school science class. Student should have completed Algebra I or be taking it concurrently as the second half of the year in Physical Science is math heavy.  Class time will be divided into a lecture time and a lab time. Most of the labs will be performed in class.  Proper lab techniques and lab writing skills will be focused on.  Student will be given a syllabus and expected to work independently throughout the week, complete assignments and turn them in in a timely manner.  Students should plan to spent at least an hour a day outside of class to stay on top of reading and assignments.  Topics covered include: Atoms and Molecules, Air, Atmosphere, Hydrosphere, Lithosphere, Weather, Newtons Laws, Forces, Sound and Light.

Biology

This course is designed to give the student a comprehensive exposure to the various fields of Biology.  It will cover the 5 kingdoms with an emphasis on Kingdom Animalia and Kingdom Plantae, basic chemistry of life, cells and cellular reproduction, evolution, and ecology. This is a rigorous high school level class. The student will be expected to complete reading outside of class at the pace of one module every 2 weeks. Student should expect to spend 1-1.5 hours daily on this class.  Labs will correspond with topics covered and will be written up in a proper format and submitted for grading.  The student needs to be able to work independently and on a time table. ​​​

Prerequisites: Algebra 1, preferred Algebra 2 concurrently, minimum grade advanced 9th grade and older

This class is designed as a college prep Chemistry class (if you desire a honors level Chemistry class, please contact Mrs. Hamlin), with the same or similar text used in local high schools.  The class is mathematics centric, therefore application of Algebraic principles and formulas will be integral.  This class will prepare students for the rigors of college level classes, and will allow for a firm understanding of higher education expectations, lab principles and practices.  Experiments/labs will be performed in class, written up at home and turned in for evaluation and grading.  The student will be expected to read the text and complete homework problems.  Topics covered include but are not limited to: matter, atoms, molecules, stoichiometry, gas laws, electron structure, thermodynamics, covalent and ionic bonding, reaction rates and acid/base equilibria.  Daily minimum time spent on this subject should be 1 hour.

This class builds upon the principles and learnings from general Biology, specifically regarding Human Anatomy and Physiology. This class will prepare students for a rigorous science curriculum, with expectations for out-of-class reading, preparation and studying. Practical application labs will be performed in class and expected to be completed at home. Memorization of medical terms and definitions will be required for the class. Topics covered include: gross anatomy, chemical processes in the body, histology, cytology and neurophysiology. Daily minimum time spent on this subject to cover readings, homework and labs should be 1-1.5 hours.

Algebra 2

(Prerequisite is Saxon Algebra 1 or Algebra 1 and Geometry of another curriculum)

Algebra 2 is a high school course and will cover concepts of linear equations, inequalities, graphs, matrices, polynomials and radical expressions, quadratic equations, functions, exponential and logarithmic expressions, sequences and series, probability and trigonometry. The student is expected to keep up with homework assignments to enhance their understanding of the material. Some class time will be available to go over problems and any questions the student may have. 

Texas Instrument scientific calculator is required (TI-30XS recommended).

Intro to Economics

Ever wondered how economies work, how they impact one another, or how they impact our personal lives?  We will explore the basic concepts, ideas and foundations of economics, from supply and demand to international economics and implications of a global community.  This economics class is a single semester, with a recommendation of Intro to Marketing in the 2nd Semester of the school year.   

The material will be presented both online and in-person (hybrid learning).  This class will consist of tests, homework, formal writing, and presentation/discussion for grading purposes.

Expectations: 

  • Extensive reading and research Ability
  • Ability to access online material.
  • Outside of class expectations will be 30 – 45 minutes per day.
  • Moderate writing Expectations with at least two formal writing assignments.

Intro to Marketing

 
Class meets:  Wednesdays, 9:00 am – 11:00 am

As a follow up to Intro to Economics and/or the Intro to Business, Intro to Marketing is a one semester class that will challenge students to CREATE, COMMUNICATE, DELIVER and EXCHANGE!  This marketing class will include writing a marketing plan.

This will include marketing basics, market planning, buying patterns, segmentation and more!  Intro to Marketing will prepare students for the world of business and social media and prepare them to make an immediate impact when making business decisions, keeping customer behaviors and consumption in mind.   

Expectations: 

  • Extensive reading and research ability
  • Ability to access online material.
  • Outside of class expectations will be 45 minutes per day.
  • Writing expectations with at least one formal writing assignments.
  • Test taking (two tests will be mandatory)

No matter what your life-path is, today’s students will be placed into a world that will require at least rudimentary business understanding, if not more.  This course is designed to start students on the path to a better understanding of the world of business and the impact of business on them.  This will include management tasks and functions, human resources, recruitment, basic marketing (followed up in the 2nd semester with Intro to Marketing) and basic accounting and book keeping! 

The class will culminate with a project to write a business plan for a new start up business, including business projections and market evaluations.

This is a class to journey through the History of the United States of America.  We will learn about the native people of America and this class will take us right up to the Civil War of the United States.  We will learn important people, places, dates and developments that formed the nation.  
 
The course will be writing and test evaluated.  We will learn how to write a research paper that includes primary and secondary sourcing, thesis development, outlining and formatting.  Tests will consist of multiple choice, short answer and reading comprehension, an excellent preparation for standardized testing.
